Our History

The winery of the A.M.A. by Angelo Mastroberardino worked and prospered here for over half a century, gaining appreciation and renown not only in Irpinia, but also in the rest of Italy, in Europe, in North Africa, up to the colonies of the then Kingdom of Italy and in the Americas, thanks to the quality of its wines and the dense network of commercial relationships developed over time.

The beginnings

The Mastroberardino heirs own an ancient industrial factory, now Cantine Storiche, located in Avellino, in the center of the protected area of the renowned Fiano di Avellino and nearby territories, famous for the production of DOCG wines, such as Taurasi and Greco di Tufo and for the cultivation of other native vines. Starting from 1878 the Mastroberardino family was at the helm of an industrious company for the production and trade of Irpinia wines.

Started by Cav. Angelo (senior), to whom we owe the modernization, reorganization and development of the pre-existing family business. Upon his death, his son Angelo Mastroberardino, after a few decades of joint management with his brother Michele, exercised the industrial activity in the old factory as a sole proprietorship, with the name A.M.A. until the year 1965.

A company of international renown

The winery of the A.M.A. by Angelo Mastroberardino worked and prospered here for over half a century, gaining appreciation and renown not only in Irpinia, but also in the rest of Italy, in Europe, in North Africa, up to the colonies of the then Kingdom of Italy and in the Americas, thanks to the quality of its wines and the dense network of commercial relationships developed over time.

It distinguished itself, among other things, for having made use of the most modern transport systems, by rail and naval cargo, operating at the time.
The traces of the dedicated track on which the carriage used to transport the grapes and wine to and from the nearby railway station are still visible in the current historic cellars.

A rare jewel of eighteenth-century industrial architecture

The company A.M.A. di Angelo Mastroberardino was active until December 1965, when its last helmsman, born on November 24, 1883, died at the age of 82, while he was still actively at the head of the company; none of his five children continued his father’s business.

Today the Historic Cellars represent a rare jewel of eighteenth-century industrial architecture and at the same time a magical place, endowed with sober and powerful fascination, in which the culture linked to wine and the territory blends with the traditions of an industrious family and with the dutiful homage to tireless people, full of passion for their work and vision of the future.

The love for work

The love for work, experienced as an all-encompassing and ennobling experience, is even testified by the ancient labels of Angelo Mastroberardino’s wines, where a shaped shield-shaped coat of arms supported by two rampant lions has a scroll inside with the motto “in labore vis ”. Strength that the majestic vaults, the tuff walls and the rough barrels of the historic cellars still release today.

The large dimensions and the articulation of the spaces of the entire structure are such as to make it fully usable today for every use, opening up to productive, commercial, tourist-accommodation and/or residential functions that know how to exploit its enormous potential of history and beauty and contribute to the development of the territory and the knowledge of its food and wine
